Fashion brand Dolce and Gabanna has a history of racist/homophobic/downright offensive statements, so let’s break down Dolce and Gabanna’s troubling past.

In 2015, Stefano Gabanna and Domenico Dolce declared they were against same sex marriage and firmly believed in a “traditional” family, meaning a man and a woman. They also declared they were against same-sex adoption, further insulting the LGBTQ+ community. In the same interview, Dolce added “You are born to a mother and a father- or at least that’s how it should be”. Dolce and Gabanna were a couple for several years, so wouldn’t it be overwhelmingly hypocritical to come out against gay marriage? Nope. Dolce declared that he doesn’t “believe in gay marriage” in a 2013 interview. So, being in a same-sex relationship was fine as long as you don’t want to get married in Dolce’s eyes.

In 2018, The Catwalk Italia’s Instagram posted a collage of Selena Gomez wearing red dresses. Stefano Gabanna commented on the post, saying “E proprio brutta!!!” which translates to “She’s so ugly!!!”. Selena’s fans went crazy and started bashing Stefano Gabanna, but he never apologized. It was clear that he wasn’t going to apologize, and that made the situation even worse.

Also in 2018, Dolce and Gabanna put out an advertisement of a Chinese woman struggling to eat pizza with her chopsticks. In the ad, she is wearing a more European style dress rather than a Chinese style dress, indicating that she is too dumb to comprehend European culture. This ad received a lot of backlash, and it definitely added to Dolce and Gabanna’s long list of offenses.

There are definitely some more instances in which Dolce and Gabanna made some racist, homophobic, and inappropriate comments, but hopefully the ones listed above give more insight into why so many people hate the brand. Next time your friend is eager to shop there, you might want to remind them of the brand’s insulting nature.
